The Happy Hedgehog Family began life as a desire to try to live and shop more ethically. It became difficult to find eco household products that were both effective and truly environmentally friendly.
In December 2017, two of the widely available brands we had used were sold to a less ethical multinational company who have received very poor ratings from Ethical Consumer.
As a family, we were not happy to continue buying these particular brands.
We began to purchase online and found some wonderful products, made by independent UK based companies who have the environment at their heart. The products are vegan and cruelty-free.
However, we still had the problem of single use plastic packaging. So, wherever we can, we refill;
helping to save money and the planet.
We are a local, independent family-run business.
10% of profits are donated to
The Children's Society.
We believe the barriers to shopping with sustainability are:
the lack of transparency of some 'eco' products; the poor availability of vegan products; the reputation that 'eco' products are not as effective as their chemical counterparts; the lack of refill services and the difficulty in recycling some packaging.
A significant barrier can also be cost.
It was the wish to overcome these barriers that gave The Happy Hedgehog life and legs.
